ENGLISH TEACHER (OR OTHER LANGUAGE) at Santa Cruz Island

In a place like Galapagos, it is important for the inhabitants to know English, in order to interact with people from all over the world. Despite being a tourist and scientific site, the population of Galapagos does not speak English in general.

Formal education in English is given only in private schools and is not compulsory for basic education. Not knowing English in Galápagos is a cause of inequality and unemployment. For this reason, we have promoted a language academy, to help prepare children for the future. Not only we are interested in English, but also other languages such as German, French, Portuguese or Mandarin.

Those interested should be willing to stay from 3 months to 1 year in Galapagos. No previous experience is required, but preferred. Likewise, we prefer those who have specialized education in social sciences.

We also value that you have additional knowledge, such as art, mathematics, music, etc.

The volunteer will assist the main teachers, if you do not have experience. If ability and experience allows it, you are welcome to teach your own class. You will help maximum 15 hours a week (without food) or 25/ week with food. The classes are in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos We are two blocks from the edge of the sea, in the center of town.

Intercambio cultural y oportunidades de aprendizaje / Learning Opportunities and Cultural Exchange

The interaction with people from different cultures permits the visitor to learn about cultural affairs.

Note: All visitors (including Ecuadorians) are allowed to stay more than 2 months here in the Galápagos, but if a volunteer wants to stay from 2 and up to 12 months, we can help you to get the TEMPORARY RESIDENT PERMIT (for up to ONE YEAR). That is great opportunity to enable you to travel in between the mainland and Galapagos any time within the year (tickets discount 50%), and have a «deepening» in the galapagueña culture.

You need to provide a scanned copy of proof/ ertification of any previous volunteer experience with other NGOs, or request the VOLUNTEER VISA to the Ecuadorian Embassy in your country (We need to sent to you the Volunteer Agreement and some FUNDAR Galápagos Certificates).

FUN STUFF you can try at GALAPAGOS ISLANDS:
(More info and tips is to be found at the reserve or on our website, made by former volunteers).

We highly recommend you to take some short trips to go visit Isabela, Floreana, and San Cristobal Islands, each for 3 days/ 2 nights..(maybe a few more nights at Isabela because it is so quiet and peaceful!). You can get your tours organized to go see any islands with any agencies on Santa Cruz.

Our island is Santa Cruz, which has the highest population of any of the islands.
Here at Santa Cruz there is so much stuff to do during the weekends:
Explore Puerto Ayora, a city on the Southern
e.g. Hiking to the PUNTUDO OR CERRO CROCKER reaching from 350 to 890 masl, biking to the GARRAPATERO BEACH (around 35km one way)
biking from PUERTO AYORA to BELLAVISTA 7km, SANTA ROSA 18km, THE TWINS 23km, from sea level to 500masl or if not, TO THE ITABACA CHANNEL 88km round trip biking with some climbings, and one of those with almost 17km of pure climbing on bike…

CAMPING nights at the GARRAPATERO for any weekends. This is a great spot to see the milky way full of stars, hunt shooting stars any night, walk where the REALLY BIG TORTOISES roam… (we have some camping gear too)

On weekdays you can visit places like:
LAS GRIETAS and Finch Bay Beach, maybe a bay tour arround, a few hours at Tortuga Bay beach and Playa Mansa, visit the new baby tortoises nursery at the Galapagos Park and Charles Darwin Research Station facilities (45 min or less), the highlands farms with lots of wild tortoises (30usd hired taxi cab required, or just ride a bike)… also a tiny hike to the highest point of Santa Cruz, the Crocker mountain and the Puntudo at 890masl..
You can explore all of them easily with plenty of free time during your stay here, simply ask other volunteers for directions or check out our website.

This opportunity is different from our Communitary Tourism Volunteer Program (which only last for a few days or a week).
